The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the Lawrence Pilot Club to initiate Project Lifesaver in Douglas County. The Project Lifesaver program has trained and equipped the Sheriff’s Office with technology that assists during searches for individuals with cognitive conditions who tend to wander. This service helps protect people at risk of becoming lost, including those with Alzheimer’s, autism, Down syndrome or other cognitive disorders. Clients enrolled in the service will wear a wrist-watch sized radio transmitter on the wrist or ankle. The transmitter constantly emits a radio frequency signal, which can be tracked regardless of where the person has wandered. When a loved one goes missing, the caregiver calls 911 and Sheriff’s deputies are dispatched to the wanderer’s area. Our trained Search Specialists use electronic radio tracking equipment in their search for the individual. Using the Project Lifesaver technology will significantly increase the likelihood of a timely and positive outcome in searches for people employing the transmitters.
Project Lifesaver has been solely funded by the generous financial support of the Lawrence Pilot Club. We intend to provide this valuable service to anyone needing it, regardless of financial situation. The cost of a transmitter and a year’s worth of wrist bands and batteries is $300. After the first year the cost of replacing the batteries and wrist bands is $10 per month. Clients enrolled in the program are encouraged to cover whatever costs they can comfortably afford. The Pilot Club has provided funds to sponsor individuals who would otherwise not be able to participate.
