CORRECTIONS OFFICER JOB DESCRIPTION

Supervise and manage inmates within our facility by using direct supervision techniques. Our officers coordinate inmate movement, scheduling of activities, and provide for a safe and secure environment for all within the facility.

Each housing unit has a team of officers specific to that area. The team leader monitors the management of the housing unit and implements needed changes, while conducting regular meetings with staff.

Our business is serving those within our facility, staff and inmates alike. We strive everyday to improve our service, which streamlines our day to day business activities. We critically examine our day to day operations routinely and make the needed changes and adjustments leading to a constant advancement in the field of corrections.

Personnel require an acceptable working environment, one which relationships between staff and inmates alike are characterized by mutual respect. We listen actively, talk openly, and act fairly. We encourage each staff member to grow and appreciate the contributions of everyone.

Candidates must pass a background check, written, psychological, and drug testing. Shift work is mandatory. The starting salary is $14.38 per hour for 2009 with an increase at six months including excellent benefits. Application forms must be completed and a resume is optional.

BENEFIT INFORMATION

• Health/Dental Insurance - Employee contributes $14.50 per pay period toward the premium. Family coverage is available at $91.50 for employee plus one, $127.00 for employee plus family.
• Vacation Leave- Accrued at the rate of 3.75 hours per pay period (every two weeks). This rate will increase with years of service.
• Sick Leave- Accrued at 4.75 hours per pay period.
• Well Leave- Employees received five (5) hours of vacation pay for every six consecutive pay periods in which they do not use any sick leave.
• Funeral Leave - Employees receive three (3) paid work days per funeral for an immediate family member or for an immediate family member of a spouse and one (1) paid work day for the following family members:  niece, nephew, cousin, aunt, uncle and in-laws and step relationships of these relatives. 
• Holidays & Personal Discretionary Days- The county has designated nine (9) paid holidays for 2008 and and additional one (1) discretionary day for full-time employees depending on start date of employment. 
• Retirement- Corrections Officers participate in the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS) after one year of employment. Once deputized, officers are transferred to the Kansas Police and Fire Retirement System (KP&F).
• Life Insurance- A portion of the retirement contribution rate paid by the employee includes a life insurance policy equal to 1 1/2 times the employee's gross salary.
• Uniforms- When required, uniforms, and sidearms are furnished by the Sheriff's Office. Uniform cleaning is provided by the County.
• Salary- Entry level Corrections Officer salary for 2009 is $14.38 per hour. With a favorable evaluation after 6 months of employment, the officer is eligible to receive a raise. Overtime is compensated.
• Reduced Gym Fees- Area gyms give discounted yearly rates to County Employees.
